With Vocalise Rachmaninov created one of his most haunting and enduring melodies and it remains today his most famous song. Shostakovich composed Piano Trio No. 1 in 1923 while he was still a student at the Petrograd Conservatory. A single movement work, it is characterised by contrasting moods of cantabile and energico. The concert closes with Franck’s Piano Quintet in F minor, a dramatic work dedicated to Camille Saint-Saëns.
