Harihara - Songs of Oothukadu and Gopalakrishna Bharati

The songs of celebrated carnatic composers Oothukadu Venkata Kavi and Gopalakrishna Bharati have been revered for centuries as deep expressions of bhakti (devotion) for the divine. A pioneer of the form in the 18th century, Oothukadu Venkata Kavi’s popular songs on Lord Krishna are at once sublimely spiritual and universally appealing. In his canonical work, Nandanar Carirtram, 19th century composer Gopalakrishna Bharati introduced a new genre of storytelling. Based on the story of a dalit‘s (untouchable) devotion to Lord Shiva, the piece brought to light the oppression of the lower Hindu castes in society.
