A transcendental quality is a prerequisite in traditional Chinese ink painting, and it is this that the artist Lin Na hopes to make manifest in Journeys in Abstraction, her second solo exhibition.
While having trained in traditional Chinese ink painting, Lin Na has, however, in recent years made the conscious leap into abstraction through a sublime manipulation of ink, water and colour pigments. The figurative has been abandoned in favour of the spontaneous, marking an entry into the realm of fantasy. Lin Na has said that each artwork should be open to interpretation, so that the viewer can be drawn into it. But what the viewer will invariably find is a confluence of the spiritual and the cerebral – that illusive state of transcendence.
