How does one value the flavourless? It runs contrary to spontaneous judgment; it contradicts Western common sense. But in Chinese culture, the bland is recognised as a positive quality. This talk attempts to upend the assumption that blandness is a negative quality through discussion of a Daoist landscape, a Confucian text, Buddhist sculpture, and a Tang dynasty poet. It invites listeners to open up to Chinese thinking, and posits the bland as a notion common to Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.
