'Tired of his mundane life, the young Kornelis fancies about Japan and is obsessed with a beautiful Japanese portrait of Princess Ming mesmerized by his own dreams, he does not notice the love from his cousin Lena. Under the influence of a strange elixir, he imagines a rendezvous with Princess Ming. At the same time, Lena starts a plot to win the heart of Kornelis.'

Like many French artists of his time, Camille Saint-Saens was influenced by the Japonism movement. La Princesse Jaune was set to a libretto by Louis Gallet in 1872, this opera comique was one of his most successful operatic works.
