From army boys to lady boys and beauty queens, Michael Chiang’s comic and explosive world of larger-than-life characters have for three decades moved even his harshest critics. One of Singapore’s most successful playwrights, Chiang’s popular works continue to enjoy restagings and adaptations.

First staged in 1987, Army Daze is a coming-of-age story about five 18-year-olds going through basic military training for the first time. This runaway hit has since enjoyed regular stage revivals, a wildly successful film adaptation, and a musical makeover.

Private Parts is Chiang’s acclaimed comedy about transgenders trying to find their place in society. Following a talk-show host who befriends three patients at a sex-change clinic, this bittersweet story touched many audiences and won Chiang multiple accolades, with The Straits Times commenting that it was 'a special production that should not close until every person in this country has seen it.'
