Indonesian textile studies is a relatively new field. Early 20th century interest produced publications by several Dutch scholars, notably on batik. But until the 1980s, not much fieldwork was done, nor were rigorous anthropological and art historical methods used. Sadly, it was by then already too late to collect reliable data for some areas. The popular literature of travel guides, in-flight magazines, and brochures of handicraft enterprises offers another resource. However, the primary objective of those is to promote a product or sell a destination to tourists. Some notions borne from these have become so entrenched that they appear in the academic literature. Traude Gavin will explore two such notions: so-called ancestor figures, and the Tree of Life.
