The legendary martial arts director, Lau Kar-leung, wanted to do the impossible: create a kung-fu filled epic about the making of a Shaolin Temple master. A 'love story of the spirit,' as he called it. The result was Shaws' number one hit of 1978, the 24th Asian Film Festival's Best Martial Arts Award winner, and is considered a trendsetting, innovative masterpiece throughout the world. Liang's adoptive brother, Gordon Lau Kar-fai, stars as a reluctant rebel who attains the ultimate knowledge of kung-fu by arduously mastering one chamber after another, eventually reaching the fabled 36th chamber. Armed with this knowledge, the monks engage in some of the most exciting battles ever staged in the history of martial arts movies. The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin remains one of the seminal films for kung fu fans. The film tells the story of one man's quest to avenge the murder of his family, friends, and teachers by a despotic government.
