In 1980 the Singapore Youth Orchestra (SYO) came under the administration of the Ministry of Education to provide rigorous training for young musicians aspiring to join the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. The XYO is the timely reunion of these young musicians of the 1980s, who honed their skills under the tutelage of Cultural Medallion winner Vivien Goh.
This concert begins with a selection of classical music evergreens from Copland, Rossini and Mendelssohn. The second half is a celebration of everything Singapore with Xinyao songs by Cultural Medallion Winner Liang Wern Fook, arranged by Samuel Tan. This will be the first-ever collaboration between Xinyao and a full-scale orchestra.
As the SYO celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2015, the XYO, a unique orchestra of all Singapore-born and bred alumni musicians creates a unique cross-genre gem in Singapore’s precious musical heritage, offering it as a gift to our nation as a celebration of its 50th birthday.
