Assuming participants have the right stuff, the longest movie marathon in Singapore will take place from the evening of November 19, Thursday, to the late-night hours of November 23, Monday.
Contestants will put their bodies to the test, and try for a mark in the Singapore Book of Records, as they attempt to sit through more than 50 sessions of movies.
The titles being screened include Hotel Rwanda, Twilight, The Young Victoria, The Hottie and the Nottie, The Ramen Girl, NEXT, Knowing, Happy Go Lucky and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.
The rules allow contestants to take 5-minute breaks after every movie and 15-minute breaks after every three movies, and they will have breakfast, lunch and dinner served to them as they remain sequestered in the challenge area, located at Plaza Singapura's Open Plaza, until fatigue overwhelms them.
Contestants who fall asleep - a three-hand-wave test will be administered to those suspected of sleeping with their eyes open - will be disqualified from the competition. If two or more contestants manage to remain awake thoughout the entire marathon, an "alertness test" will be used to select the winner.
The final winner will take home $10,000 worth of prizes including cash and a four-day/three-night trip for two to Hollywood.
Ten local celebrities will also be testing their endurance at the event by participating in a 24-hour movie marathon on Saturday, with the winning celebrity garnering $10,000 for a chosen charity.
They consist of husband-and-wife team Wong Li-Lin and Allan Wu, DJs Vernon and Shan from 98.7FM, artistes Jimmy T, Alaric Tay, Benjamin Heng, and Adele Wong, and professional basketball players from the Singapore Slingers team, Kyle Jeffers and Marcus Ng.
(Jeffers told inSing.com that his preparation simply involves good food and adequate rest, while Ng said: "I've rented a couple of DVDs and I'll be having a trial marathon before the actual thing.")
While they may not speak to contestants or celebrities, onlookers are welcomed to offer moral support with their presence and also view the movies being screened.
The 100-hours movie marathon is being organised by the Nescafé Professional, in conjunction with the launch of their new Nescafe Frappé cold coffee drink. For more information, visit www.100hours.com.sg.
