2012 summer movie preview: The remakes

Like the original ‘Karate Kid’ movie, the Arnold version of ‘Total Recall’ is considered by some Sci-Fi nerds to be a true classic, probably because of some memorable Arnold-isms, over-the-top violence and an alien woman with three boobs.

While it hits close to home, it reminds us way too much of that remake of ‘The Karate Kid’ in 2010.

At first glance, the remake appears a lot less violent, opting instead for more of a slick feel for its action set pieces.

The remake has also upped the hot chick quotient:  Sharon Stone, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel. Especially in the case of Beckinsale, who screams pure devious in the trailers.

That said, we shall hold our judgements and wait to see if this remake will become the more definitive rendition of the Phillip K. Dick novel.

Another year, another Tim Burton + Johnny Depp pair-up  in another funny make up movie, ‘Dark Shadows’.

'Dark Shadows' featurette

While it’s a remake, it's safe to assume that not a lot of Singaporeans will know of the original, based on a gothic soap opera that ran from 1966 to 1971.

Depp plays the son of a British immigrant family from Liverpool. Set in 1752, the family transplant themselves to Maine, where Barnabas (Depp), lives the life of a wealthy playboy in Colinwood Manor. Unfortunately, a fling with the saucy Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) goes horribly sour -- and as everybody knows, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Except when the woman who happens to be a witch, which unfortunately for Barnabas, Angelique totally is.

She turns him into a vampire, buries him alive, and he wakes up way later in 1972, only to find his mansion now in ruins and occupied by his dysfunctional descendants. Fun times for everyone.
