5 best hostels for a budget staycation

With the F1 Singapore Grand Prix just a few weeks away, gear up to a roaring start with these budget staycations!

Stylish and affordable, these hostels are also in accessible town locations so it won’t take you long to get to the tracks.

Matchbox The Concept Hostel

We’re in love with this hostel’s bright colours and hip location, which is the midst of Ann Siang Hill’s coolness. Opened this August, Matchbox prides itself as the first flashpacker (a term for affluent backpackers) hostel in Southeast Asia and boasts orthopedic foam mattresses, organic cotton bolsters and ergonomic reading lights for each pod.

It also pays attention to details with facilities such as a steam iron, hair straightener, curling tongs, skincare amenities and chick lit for its ladies-only dormitory.

Rates: From $45 nett per pod/night (inclusive of all-day breakfast and WIFI)

39 Ann Siang Road, Singapore. Tel: +65 6423 0237. www.matchbox.sg.

Wink Hostel

WIN! We are giving away a Weekend for the Girls package (worth $600) for this spanking new hostel. Find out how to enter this contest.

The most tech-savvy of the bunch, Wink is the newest kid to hop onto the flashpacking bandwagon. Each of its custom-made pod is built with sound-resistant walls and features dedicated ambient lighting, anti-glare LED reading light and power sockets.

Most noteworthy is its Wink Integrated Platform – upon check-in, guests received a Smart Card that is pre-programmed with their profiles and preferences and it authorises secure access to rooms, personal lockers and communal facilities. Be prepared to be impressed!

Rates: $50 per pod/night (inclusive of breakfast and WIFI)

8A Mosque Street, Singapore. www.winkhostel.com. “Like” the Wink Hostel Facebook page for the latest updates and promotions!

Beary Nice! Hostel

Located right on the street with loads of yummy local hawker fares, Beary Nice! is a winner with guests who love a cultural exposure that Chinatown provides. We like the hostel’s warm and cosy atmosphere and the availability of an elevator – no more trekking up flights of stairs with heavy luggage (or just cos you’re feeling lazy…)!

There are netbooks in the lounge area for free usage and even a Wii console for you to work off those calories from the sinful food you are surrounded by.

Rates: From $26 nett per bed/night (inclusive of breakfast and WIFI)

46B Smith Street, Singapore. Tel: +65 6222 4951. www.abearygoodhostel.com

Drop Inn Hostel

Simple and clean, we like Drop Inn’s subtle touch of typography and graphics around the space. Each room is named after a Singapore district, such as Orchard, Ang Mo Kio and Bishan so foreign guests get a sense of local geography.

If you fancy a double bed and more floor space, be sure to book the Orchard room. Located on Lavender Street, it’s of close proximity to Boon Keng MRT and Farrer Road MRT stations.

Rates: From $22 nett per bed/night (inclusive of breakfast and WIFI)

253 Lavender Street, Singapore. Tel: +65 6229 3817. www.dropinnhostel.com.

Betel Box Hostel

The pioneer of the lot, the eight-year-old establishment is located in a somewhat dodgy area of Singapore. Regardless, it’s still safe and the venue actually makes for an interesting stay – giving guests a glimpse of our local seedy bar scene.

Having won the ‘Best Travel Experience’ under Singapore Experience Awards by Singapore Tourism Board, Betel Box also provides free scheduled tours and activities and usage of its fitness centre. Another plus are the thick, firm and professionally sanitised mattresses that meet chiropractic standards set by Australian Spinal Research Foundation.

Rates: From $20 nett per bed/night (inclusive of breakfast and WIFI)

200 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore. Tel: +65 6247 7340. www.betelbox.com.

This is of a monthly series of staycation suggestions. Tune back every month to see where your next weekend getaway in Singapore should be!
