5 post-PSLE treats for the whole family

PSLE is finally over and it’s time to give your primary six child (and yourself) a breather!

Here are some fun things to treat your child to, that the whole family can get involved in too.

Half day: Go ice skating

Kids of all ages, but especially older kids, love ice-skating with their friends. In fact this activity has caught on so much that Singapore now has three ice-skating rinks. Skates can be rented and gloves and socks purchased cheaply, so you just really need to make sure your kid is dressed warm enough and in trousers or leggings. The rinks at Kallang Leisure Park and JCube are the most popular, with the artificial ice rink at Marina Bay Sands being quieter.

Half day: Race on a go kart

If you or your child harbours secret desires to be a F1 driver, here’s the place to act them out. With an excellent track and karts for beginners and for adults and children to drive in pairs, this is perfect set up for a fun drive. Don’t be fooled by the beginners’ karts, they can zip around at relatively high speeds! Drivers need to be at least 10 years old and 1.45 metres tall.

Kartright Speedway │ Address: #01-05, 511 Upper Jurong Road │ Tel: 6265 3303 │ Opening hours: Tue–Fri 11am–10pm, Sat–Sun 9am–7pm; Sat and Sun mornings are kids and family sessions │ Price: Compulsory membership: $35/yearr (adults), $25/year (child aged 11–17 yrs); fun kart rental: $35–$45 (adults), $25–$35 (child under 21 yearrs) ; two-seater: $50–$65; rental prices are for 10-minute blocks

Full day: Brunch at Barnacles’ Sunday Garden Party

This is more than a brunch; it’s a mini getaway. At the buffet, kids have their own spread with kid-friendly food, while grown-ups have the works, comprising as much fresh seafood, meats, main courses, desserts, and more, as you can stomach. For an additional fee, you can also spend the afternoon in the pool. As the kids splash around, mum and dad can check into the spa where they get 15 per cent off a la carte treatments. On top of that, stay through the evening and drinks are one-for-one drinks at Siloso Beach Bar from 5–6pm. Now isn’t this a fabulous day out?

One to two days: Legoland

Before the hordes descend on this hot attraction for the long school break, take the chance to enjoy it. Needless to say your kids will love the rides and fun things to do; and you can either do this in a day or stay the night nearby for a more leisurely visit.

Two days or more: Check into Festive Hotel’s Family Rooms

Make a weekend of it and check into one of Festive Hotel’s deluxe family rooms. Pre-teen kids will love their loft-style bed, while mum and dad can have a king-sized bed all to themselves. Larger families will benefit from a sofa bed that opens out into a comfy double bed. Beyond these rooms, Festive Hotel’s family experience extends to the rest of the property, with kiddy bathrobes and other amenities to pamper your young one. And, of course, Universal Studios is right next door.
