Kalaa Utsavam – Indian Festival of Arts is back at the Esplanade to showcase some wonderfully vibrant Deepavali performances.

With a wide range of both contemporary and traditional art forms to showcase, this year’s Kalaa Utsavam will run from Nov 12 to 21 and will feature works by artists spanning multiple genres. Look out for music, theatre, dance and visual arts performances.

 

CAN'T MISS

One of the biggest highlights has to be the one-night-only concert by Bollywood singing sensation Sunidhi Chauhan. This young talent sings everything from traditional folk songs to Bollywood hits and Hindi hip-hop and rock. It certainly doesn’t hurt that this gorgeous young babe is the singing sensation of the decade with powerful vocals that have made audiences the world over fall in love with her. Most recently, she’s been seen on TV as an Indian Idol Judge. This is one concert you won’t want to miss!

Other Music highlights

Watch out for classical music treats of the santoor (a 100-string lute) performance by Tarun Bhattacharya entitled Master of 100 Strings and Sounds of Heaven which features the jaltarang (a unique instrument comprising of china bowls filled with water and struck with two cane sticks). These performances are not to be missed because these two instruments are rarely played in Singapore.

Theatre and Dance

Catch Bollywood celebrities Rajat Kapoor, Sheeba Chadha, Munish Bhardwaj and Vinay Pathak in their performance The Blue Mug from Nov 12 – 14. This Hindi-English play was inspired by The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales.

Free performances

There’s also plenty of free performances happening like Kerala’s panchavadyam (music of five instruments) and Indian bands at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. In fact, catch several band showcases that experiment with new sounds which blend traditional and modern approaches.  In addition there are soothing Indian music performances every evening at the Esplanade Concourse throughout the 10-day festival.
