Celebrate the Moon at Moonfest!

It’s that time of the year again where the moon is at its biggest and brightest! What better way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival than by the bay?

That’s right, the Esplanade’s annual Moonfest is back for its 6th year running and there’s lots of cultural festivities abound! Celebrate the lunar mid-autumn festival with the assortment of Chinese arts highlights including Chinese opera, puppetry, lantern riddles, cross talk and more.

The Thunderstorm

Among the ticketed performances, highlights include The Thunderstorm, a gripping drama adapted for traditional opera from Cao Yu’s literary classic. It tells the tale of a disturbed young man who seeks salvation, only to culminate in a stormy night of potential destruction.

Of course, what mid-autumn celebration would be complete without the beloved story of the star-crossed lovers The Heavenly Maiden and the Mortal? Will their timeless romance that spans heaven and earth have a happy ending? Find out for yourself!

The Heavenly Maiden and the Mortal

For the kids, there’s plenty of fun and excitement to be found in the traditional puppetry performance Dragon Dance. A lively retelling of the legend behind the origins of Chinese dragon dance, the specially-hand crafted puppets will enrapture the young ones.

There’s also plenty of other programmes for the whole family to enjoy, and the best part is they’re all free! Enjoy Cantonese opera excerpts, witty Chinese crosstalk dialogues, a wushu display, Chinese ensemble music, songs from your favourite TV drama serials, lantern riddles as well as the annual Lantern Walkabout on Sept 10 (Sat).

Moonfest 2011 is on from Sept 6-11, at the Esplanade.
