Jackie Chan: Work first over family

Hong Kong movie veteran Jackie Chan, 61, said that 2015 marks his 54th year in the movie industry.

And there will be no slowing down for him, as he cited how work still takes priority over his family.

“The reason being, I am able to see them the next day or the day after. To me, once I’m done with work, there’s no turning back, but for family, I am able to meet them anytime I want,” he told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday 10 February while promoting his latest movie 'Dragon Blade' in Singapore.

Chan’s comment comes as his son Jaycee Chan was recently sentenced to jail for providing a venue for drug use.

The older Chan said that he would not be picking up his son when he is released from jail later this week.

“I think he (Jaycee Chan) has received the punishment he deserves. I don’t want to say anything about him. I am sure he reflected on his actions and will be able to face the future.”

Chan and the main cast, including Hollywood actors John Cusack and Adrien Brody, actor-singer Choi Siwon from South Korean group Super Junior, and Chinese actresses Mika Wang and Lin Peng were in town for the promotion event.

Directed by Daniel Lee and produced by Chan, 'Dragon Blade' took seven years to prepare and a year to film.

It has one of the largest budgets –US$65 million (S$88 million) – in the Chinese film industry, working with 300 production crew, 800 extras and 200 horses.

Set in the Han Dynasty, it tells the tale of Huo An (Chan), a leader of the Silk Road protection squad, a group of men who kept the peace on the route which stretches between 35 nations in the region.

But things get complicated when Huo is accused of treason, and Lucius (John Cusack), a Roman general who is being pursued by a vast army led by Roman consul Tiberius (Adrien Brody), arrives in the desert region.

Using minimal computer-generated imagery, the entire film was shot in Dunhuang and Gobi Desert, China. The cast and crew braved sandstorms and harsh weathers (freezing cold weather in the night and blazing heat during the day).

The time spent together drew the cast closer, and at the press conference, they bantered and shared jokes. Cusack (who has starred in 'Being John Malkovich' and 'Serendipity') said: "I am a huge Jackie Chan fan, so to be able to work with Jackie... was a grand experience. It felt like I was starting a new chapter in my career."

‘Dragon Blade’ opens 19 February 2015
