First Look: Tom Hanks in Cold War thriller 'Bridge of Spies'

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg team up again in 'Bridge of Spies', a historical thriller based on a screenplay by the Coen Brothers ('No Country for Old Men') and Matt Charman ('Suite Francaise').

Hanks plays James B Donovan, an insurance lawyer who agreed to defend KGB spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) in a US court, and who later negotiated with the Soviet Union to exchange his client for  downed US spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell).

The
prisoner exchange took place on the Glienicke Bridge, which connected East Germany and West Berlin, hence the title.

This is not the first time that Spielberg is using his history-based films as a soapbox ('Munich', 'Lincoln'). Donovan is portrayed as a patriot defending the idea that everyone deserves a fair trial, alluding to America's present treatment of war/terror prisoners.

The movie also stars Amy Ryan and Alan Alda.

'Bridge of Spies' opens 15 Oct 2015
