May 28th, 2011 became a monumental date in local history when Universal Studios Singapore officially opened its magical doors to the public. And indeed, the grand opening was a celebration befitting the first amusement park in Southeast Asia.
Guest-of-Honour, Mr Lim Hng Kiang - Minister for Trade and Industry - graced the event to officiate the grand opening. He was joined by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay - chairman of the Genting Group and Resorts World Sentosa - and Tom Williams - chairman and chief executive of Universal Parks and Resorts.
The explosive sounds of fired gunpowder marked the end of the welcoming speeches and the beginning of the festivities. Confetti started falling from the sky as everyone's favourite animated characters (like Shrek and the cast of Madagascar) and impersonators of timeless cultural icons (like Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin) began their grand procession along the designated roads.
Dance choreographer and former American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, also made headlines for being amongst the list of international celebrities to attend the grand opening at Resorts World Sentosa.
After walking the red carpet at the Gala Dinner the night before, the petite lady returns for her hand-printing ceremony. "Live Love Sing and Dance"was the personalised message she left to dry on the wet cement slab.
With the roller coaster ride, Battlestar Galatica, finally deemed safe enough for the public, there is a bound to be a lot of that going on.
