Get ‘Yer Green On: St Patrick's Day Guide 2012

You can celebrate St. Patrick's Day without flying all the way to Ireland with plenty of events taking place around Singapore from March 12.

Originally, the March 17 holiday honoured the patron saint of Ireland (St. Patrick of course) for bringing Christianity to the Emerald Isle for the first time. Over the years, the holiday has transformed into a multi-dimensional festival that’s celebrated the world over featuring parades, oyster shucking competitions, feasts and parties. Pubs and bars will come alive with people drinking pints of Guinness, wearing top hats, listening to live music and just getting their leprechaun on.

So don’t wait until Saturday to feel green and festive. There's plenty to get you in the Irish spirit:

CAN'T MISS

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

What’s St. Paddy’s Day without a parade? This much-anticipated annual event sees Boat Quay and Empress Place getting a swathe of paint in shades of green this Sunday. Jointly organized by the Irish Chamber of Commerce and St Patrick's Society, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Sun, Mar 18) commemorates St. Patrick as well as the Irish National Day. Expect to see a raucous affair this year featuring thousands of participants including marching bands, bagpipes and loads of costumes. This year's parade starts at 3pm and will make its way from Empress Place (near the Sir Stamford Raffles statue), across the Singapore River, and ends at UOB Plaza. This year the parade will be held in conjunction with the Down Syndrome Association of Singapore’s Buddy Walk to commemorate the World Down Syndrome Day. And don’t forget to wear green.
