Each year at San Diego Comic-Con International, the Hall H panels are hotly anticipated – this hall of the San Diego Convention Centre is where the biggest movie stars and most prolific filmmakers preview their new films in front of excited fans, many of whom have waited overnight in line to get in. Naturally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe battled it out for the affection of fans, but one of the most exciting first looks to come out of this year’s SDCC was for Ready Player One.
The futuristic sci-fi adventure is adapted from Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. Director Steven Spielberg, Cline, co-screenwriter Zak Penn, and actors Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and T.J. Miller took the Hall H stage to present the film’s first teaser trailer.
Sheridan as Wade Watts
The film centres on teenager Wade Watts (Sheridan), who lives in the dystopian slums of Columbus, Ohio, known as ‘the Stacks’. Wade’s only escape is into the virtual reality realm known as OASIS, created by James Donovan Halliday (Mark Rylance). Within OASIS, Wade takes on the avatar of Parzival, engaging in an elaborate Easter Egg hunt devised by Halliday. Whoever collects all the clues hidden throughout OASIS will inherit Halliday’s fortune. Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn), the head of operations at a multinational internet service provider firm, aims to monetize OASIS and tries to recruit Wade to find the Easter Eggs for him. Within OASIS, Wade meets Art3mis (Cooke), a fellow Easter Egg Hunter or ‘gunter’ on whom he has a massive crush. Using his knowledge of pop culture, Wade journeys through OASIS in a geeky, high-tech odyssey. The film also stars Lena Waithe as Parzival’s friend Aech and T.J. Miller as the bounty hunter i-R0k.
Iron Giant in Ready Player One
Cline’s novel can be described as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets The Matrix and Wreck-It Ralph”. The link to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is hinted at by the choice of music in the trailer, an instrumental variation of the song “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This then segues into Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” – another Rush song, “Discovery”, plays a key role in the book. Ready Player One functions as a paean to 80s geek culture, and the teaser trailer packs in a wealth of references. Parzival drives the DeLorean from Back to the Future, while Art3mis is seen astride the red motorcycle from Akira. Other notable vehicles dotting OASIS include the V8 Interceptor from Mad Max, the A-Team’s van and the titular Plymouth Fury from Christine. Parzival battles Freddy Kreuger and Duke Nukem, with the Iron Giant set to play a key role. DC Comics characters Harley Quinn and Deathstroke are also glimpsed.
Prepare to enter the OASIS when Ready Player One opens in March 2018.
