A worldwide celebration of all things Smurf will be taking place this Saturday, July 25 as part of celebrations to mark the birthday of Peyo, the original creator of The Smurfs.
Also, as part of a global publicity campaign in anticipation of the Smurfs’ return to the big screen, an attempt to break the previous record for most people dressed as Smurfs in a 24-hour window will be attempted. To facilitate this, adjudicators from the Guinness World Records will be well on hand in 12 cities as floods of people dressed in a white hat and blue paint are expected to throng the streets as part of the festivities. The mark that needs to be broken is 2,510 smurfs.
The cities that will be participating are:
- Brussels, Belgium (Peyo’s native country)
- Athens, Greece
- Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland
- Dublin, Ireland
- Mexico City, Mexico
- Panama City, Panama
- Warsaw, Poland
- Moscow, Russia
- Johannesburg, South Africa
- New York, USA
- London, UK
Many more activities are being organized to mark the day all, literally painting the towns blue. More information on these events can be found at www.globalsmurfsday.com
Singapore will be celebrating the event with special limited Smurfs themed popcorn sets at Cathay Cineplexes for $9. Each set comes with blue popcorn, a blue drink and an exclusive Smurf collectible. To end it off, we have a clip for your viewing; a feature on Global Smurfs Day and also the history on the Smurfs’ origins.
The Smurfs (in 3D) opens on September 1 in Singapore.
