Grow out your Mo for charity

It’s the month of Mo’s! Movember is an annual, month-long charity initiative that encourages men to grow out their ‘staches to become walking, talking billboards for commonly unspoken men’s health issues like prostate cancer. What makes it extra special this year is that for the first time, Singapore and Hong Kong will serve as official ambassadors for Movember in Asia.

Movember was established in 2003 by a few friends over a beer in a small bar in Fitzroy, Australia. The goal was simple – to create a campaign promoting the growth of the moustache among like-minded people whilst raising a bit of money for charity and having fun along the way. Eight years on, Movember has grown to become a global movement, running official campaigns in 21 countries around the world and inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate.

See why Movember is such a big deal all over the world.

Gentlemen, commit to the cause by starting with a clean, Gilette-worthy face on 1 November. For the rest of month, you newly dubbed Mo Bros are encouraged to grow out and groom your dashing new Mo, or visit the pop-up barber at Penhaligon's (ION Orchard, Level 3) for a free trim from 31 October. Performing free vintage close shaves for the public is Movember’s partner barber Hounds of the Baskervilles – a new vintage barber along Haji Lane.

Adrian Pang, Movember ambassador and local celebrity says, “Men just don’t talk about their health as openly as women do, but Movember engages them through creative wit – it is a fun way to shed light on a serious matter. I’ll be thrilled to wear my Mo as proudly as many of my female friends wear their pink ribbons for breast cancer. If you can grow it, you’ve gotta’ Mo it!”

Ladies, support your mo-bearing counterparts by seeking out sponsorships to raise funds for the cause too. Last year, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising AUD$124 million. This time round, Movember’s beneficiary is the Singapore Cancer Society.

All funds raised will be distributed locally to fund the education, awareness and research for prostate cancer, and to encourage men to go for regular health checks. Register and sign up for the cause now at http://sg.movember.com.  Every style of Mo has a different personality. So, decide which Mo you wish to embody this month and become that man.

For the record, keep your moustache clean by using a hot face washer to steam and cleanse the skin under your moustache hair. Those coarse hairs also benefit from regular conditioning –massage your Mo with a dollop of conditioner then rinse thoroughly. In the meantime, you’d probably want to avoid foods like spaghetti carbonara and toffee apples (yikes).

As an incentive, a series of online giveaways and competitions will in order to give you the chance to spend a day in the life of a certain profession. See what it’s like to be a radio DJ, theatre performer, fashion stylist, journalist, club DJ or fashion designer just by signing up on Movember’s Facebook page.
