Hundreds of fans set new 'ghostly' world record for 'Ghostbusters' movie

Not even heavy rain deterred fans from getting their ghost on to set a world record at Marina Bay Sands on 12 June 2016.

263 fans assembled at the Shoppes’ Event Plaza to claim the new Guinness World Records’ title for “Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Ghosts at a Single Venue”.

The event was held in anticipation of the release of ‘Ghostbusters’, the much-anticipated reboot of the classic film which will open in Singapore on 14 July.

“Seeing this many people get their ghost on and set a Guinness World Records title is a true testament to this amazing franchise that Dan, Harold and Ivan created 32 years ago. Ghostbusters of the world, gear up!” said director Paul Feig.

One avid fan, however, decided to stand out from the crowd and came as a member of the iconic ghost-busting group for the event.

Jon Goon, 26, flew down from Kuala Lumpur for the event. The director of a movie props company came dressed as Ghostbuster Peter Venkman (famously played by Bill Murray), complete with his custom-made Proton Pack.

The 53-year-old filmmaker is in Singapore with lead actress Melissa McCarthy to promote the movie.

“I can’t believe that the Ghostbusters are doing this event here in Singapore,” the lifelong fan enthused.

In the new movie, we’ll see the first all-female team figuring out how to bust some ghosts.

‘Ghostbusters’ also stars Kate McKinnon, as nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann; Kristen Wiig as particle physicist Erin Gilbert; McCarthy as paranormal researcher Abby Yates; and Leslie Jones, whose character Patty Tolan brings essential knowledge of New York City to the team.

“I don’t really care about all the negative talk about the all-female cast because we’re finally getting something new after 27 years,” Goon said. Some fans have lashed out about the movie’s all-female cast.

Goon added: “I’m expecting a complete reboot as well as an homage to the original film. I can’t wait for July to arrive!”

Feig is proud of “his girls”. “I believe Melissa and the rest of the cast will do it justice, and fans will love the movie,” he said.
