James Franco and Anne Hathaway: Hosts with the mosts?

In what has been said to be an unexpected turn this year, actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been named to helm the mother of all award shows, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, to be held on February 27, 2011.

This surprise move may come as a shocker to loyal award show viewers who are used to seeing the likes of veteran hosts like Academy-favourite, Bob Hope (who has hosted 18 ceremonies) and more recent comedic choices like Billy Crystal (eight ceremonies), Whoopi Goldberg (four ceremonies) and Steve Martin (three ceremonies) all of whom were above 36 years of age during their first hosting stint.

However, this time round, come show day, Hathaway will be the youngest Oscar host at 28 years of age, with co-host Franco just barely into his 30s, at age 32. If this isn’t a bid to transform the usually “stuffy” award show into something cool and relevant to the younger generation, we don’t know what is.

Hathaway won rave reviews during her surprise routine when Hugh Jackman was hosting the Oscars back in 2009, and both she and Franco have graced the famed stages of Saturday Night Live to roaring successes, proving that they could hold their own when it came to comedic turns. The young and beautiful duo have also earned their clout in the actingcommunity with Hathaway earning a Best Supporting Actress nod in 2009 for Rachel Getting Married and Franco earning a Best Actor nod this year for 127 Hours.

The decision to go with a duo was partly inspired by the successful job done by last year’s hilarious pairing of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, and the producers also decided to give it a fresh twist by making it a male-female pair, something which we have not seen since Jerry Lewis and Celeste Holm took to the stage in 1957.

Well, if this is the Academy’s way of updating the ceremony and trying their hand at winning over the chunk of viewership in the young adult and teen segments, we applaud their youthful move and will be keeping our eyes peeled. How about the rest of you? Will you be watching the awards this year?
