Kevin Costner recalls memory replacement in 'Criminal'

Scientific fact mixes with science fiction in action thriller 'Criminal'.

In the film, actor Kevin Costner plays grizzled convict Jericho Stewart who gets chosen by the CIA to have memories implanted in his head to thwart a terrorist attack.

The memories are those of CIA agent Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds), who gets murdered before he can tell his superiors where he's hidden a computer hacker who knows how to access the US weapons program but is also being sought out by a terrorist group.

British actor Gary Oldman, who plays the head of the UK based wing of the CIA, was reticent about joining the production purely because of its far-fetched subject matter, but soon his doubts were put to rest by director Ariel Vromen.

The film, which was shot on location in the UK, sees Costner's character become confused by his memories and break out of custody immediately after the memory transfer operation to continue Pope's mission. Costner admitted that the post-operation wounds helped him put in a more realistic performance.

'Criminal' opens 21 Apr 2016
