Deepavali (also known as “Diwali”) is here! This year, the Festival of Lights celebrated by Hindus all over the world falls on 26 October. The best place to soak up the magical atmosphere of this important Hindu festival is obviously Little India, where the streets light up with a magical glow and festive bazaars never stop buzzing.
Deepavali is the best time of the year to visit the Serangoon Road temples of Sri Veerama Kaliamman, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman, and Sri Srinivasa Perumal, as worshipers decorate these places with garlands of jasmine flowers and brilliantly lit arches.
Until 6 November, Little India is magically transformed into a brightly-lit wonderland every night from 7pm. The entire light-up spans from Race Course Lane to Kinta Road, so take your time to wander around.
Another highlight is the Deepavali Heritage and Craft Exhibition and Bazaar at the Deepavali Festival Village taking place on Campbell Lane. This is great for soaking up the buzzing atmosphere with plenty of stalls hawking colorful Indian attire, jewellery, costumes, arts and crafts as well as a mouth-watering array of festive goodies.
Lastly, don’t miss the Deepavali Countdown Concert happening on 25 October, 9pm onwards! Local celebrities ring in the season’s closing and the entire street erupts into one big street party later on.
