Michaela Therese brings back power to the 'Pore

Soul singer Michaela Therese will have you know that music in Singapore is experiencing a revival.

“I feel like we’re going through a little bit of a renaissance, in that there are so many people doing so many interesting things. There are so many bands doing original music now, and it’s so encouraging,” she said in an interview with inSing before her concert on Friday 26 September at the Esplanade Recital Studio.

The 33-year-old, who has been tinkering away at the piano since the age of four, has been performing for the past 14 years. Now with two self-titled EPs and an album ('My Name is MEEKELLAH') under her belt, she felt that the time was right to celebrate the music of others as well.

The hour-long show, ‘Power to the ‘Pore’, is part of the ‘Late Nite’ series at the Esplanade, and it is a tribute to the past and present of Singapore music, her musical love letter to the scene.

But condensing all the available material into an hour proved to be a hard task. Therese was spoilt for choice.

“When I was trying to decide who to cover, I wanted to kick myself. There were so many bands and artistes that I would have had to put on a five-hour show, if I really wanted to cover everybody,” she said.

A MUSICAL HISTORY LESSON OF SORTS

During the show, she hopes to explore the vast catalogue of Singapore music, and all the different styles of music that it encompasses.

Paying tribute to the greats, Therese will be covering songs by Zubir Said, the man who composed Singapore's national anthem, as well as more contemporary counterparts such as the R&B singer Vanessa Fernandez and rockers Caracal.

As someone who comes from a musical family herself, she will also be doing songs from her uncles, Moses and Chris Vadham from the bands Gingerbread and Western Union Band, who were big names in the 1970s and 1980s in Singapore. To older Singaporeans, songs such as ‘Sausalito’ and ‘Roses’ were radio staples.

Even with the mixed bag of musical stylings, Therese is talented enough a musician to seamlessly transition between the decades, and interpret the various styles in her own soulful way. Backed by a band consisting of Naz on keys, Tim De Cotta on bass and Teo Jia Rong on drums, the show will be an education of sorts, uncovering gems of songs along the way.

The singer-songwriter will also be premiering her own music video for ‘Make You Think’ off her album ‘My Name is MEEKELLAH’ released in April this year.

With her battle cry to bring back power to the city's music scene, you will want to raise your right hand in a crescent-moon arc and your left to represent the five stars on the Singapore flag and shout out ‘#POWERTOTHEPORE” loud enough for the world to hear.
