The trailer for the fourth instalment of the long running Mission Impossible action franchise opens with a strong speech by Tom Wilkinson, essentially breaking down the plot for us. We really like the trailer’s structure. It gives us the premise of the Kremlin being bombed, Hunt and team taking the rap to go deep cover and then let’s the action sequences take over without letting plot jargon bog us down too much. That’s how you should do it!
While we do not know Wilkinson’s character yet, we get quick looks at a few others. Agent Brandt, played by Jeremy Renner, has some tension with Ethan Hunt. He certainly seems to know much more about Hunt then vice versa. And is it just me or Renner only takes on badass roles nowadays? It seems like every film he’s been in; he always has that hardened attitude and generally acts like a sourpuss. Other agents with Hunt are played by Paula Patton, Josh Holloway and Simon Pegg (!).
The action sequences look stunning. Car crashes, lots of gun fire and hand to hand combat are all present in generous amounts and the highlight; an ascent of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai on geeky gadget gloves given to Hunt by Simon Pegg. However, the wildcard that MI:GP has… is its director. Brad Bird, of The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille fame, is one of the most accomplished directors in animated film history. Whether that will translate to success for MI:GP remains to be seen, but given that Bird’s strong suit is in delivering a story with strong visuals… he has a strong chance.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol opens December 13th.
