'Notre Dame de Paris' comes to Singapore

'Notre Dame de Paris', the Victor Hugo classic that has seen many popular reincarnations on the big screen will open at Marina Bay Sands, Grand Theatre on 17 December.

Performing for the first time in English here, the musical which debuted in 1998, is based on the novel 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame' about thye hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo and Gypsy girl Esmeralda.

It’s one of the most powerful love stories in history, ‘on par with Romeo and Juliet,’ according to a statement by BASE Entertainment.

According to The Guinness Book of Records, the show had the most successful first year of any musical ever. It is also considered one of the best adaptations of a novel, together with 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Les Misérables'. Since its debut in Paris in 1998, the play has been translated and played in several languages, and Italy, France, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada and Belgium all appreciated the musical.

Originally written in French, with original lyrics by the French-Canadian artist Luc Plamondon and music by the Italian singer Riccardo Cocciante; the lyrics for English version of the musical is written by Will Jennings, the man who wrote the smash hit 'My Heart Will Go On.'

The show promises acrobatic contemporary dance choreography and beautiful melodies, and the set will feature a 12-metre high ‘climbing wall’ representing the façade of the grand cathedral of Notre Dame as well as the famous Bastille prison in Paris.
