Ryan Reynolds bares all in 'Deadpool'

There is another reason why ‘Deadpool’ is the first comic book superhero movie with an R rating.

Yes, there is the gratuitous violence and graphic language. But the reason that will get Ryan Reynolds fans in a tizzy is that the actor will be in the buff in one action scene where his character Wade Wilson gets into a fight with the movie’s main villain Ajax, and he does it in his birthday suit.

“We love this action sequence in David Cronenberg’s ‘Eastern Promises’ where Viggo Mortensen’s character got into a fight in a spa, and he’s totally naked. There is nothing more vulnerable than getting into an altercation when you’re naked. So we took some cues from that.”

“But you will get to see just a little bit. We don’t want the scene to just be about someone’s junk.”

The 39-year-old actor was in Taiwan to promote his newest movie, ‘Deadpool’.

An original story following Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, who's subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers. He adopts an alter ego — Deadpool — and hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

“I am so excited that the movie is finally made. It has been a labour of love,” Reynolds beamed.

This is not the actor’s first stab at the character. In 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’, the actor also played Wade Wilson, but the treatment of the character was criticised by fans.

Speaking at the movie’s press conference in Taipei, the actor said that the character has been an alter-ego of sorts for him.

“That is why I desperately want this movie made. Sometimes I even wonder if it’s Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool, or is it Deadpool playing Ryan Reynolds.” he said.

"I've never seen a dragon like that! It has LED lights," exclaimed Reynolds as he is treated to a special Deadpool Movie dragon dance at the movie's press conference.

“This role is a match made in heaven.”

In the comic story, the Deadpool character is known for his snappy quips.

“He has a certain way of speaking: It’s fast, vile and vulgar.”

Reynolds, who also served as the movie’s producer, said that he had complete freedom from the studio to make the movie whatever way he wants.

“After saying no to us for 10 years, the studio finally green-lit the movie. I think they were sick of us asking that they finally relented. But there were a few things that the studio were very upset with. There were a few scenes where I made specific mentions of studio executives by name. They didn’t like it and that got cut from the movie.”

“Deadpool is neither a good guy nor a bad guy. I love playing characters that are morally flexible. To me, that is very fun and unusual.”

“In the comic book world, particularly Marvel’s X-Men universe, there are a lot of characters that are such goody-two-shoes. It is refreshing to see someone like Deadpool out in the world because it is nice to see a guy with balls.”

‘Deadpool’ opens in Singapore 11 Feb 2016
