Shaken & Stirred: 4th edition of RIPE-WSA Cocktail Challenge heats up

Come April 17 to 19 bartenders will shake, stir, blend, muddle, flair and work the beer openers in the 4th edition of the RIPE-WSA Cocktail Challenge –organized  in conjunction with the trade show, Wine & Spirits Asia 2012 to be held over the same period.

Each contestant will compete in one of the four challenges available: cocktail, mocktail, flairing and speed bottle cap opening. Two heats from April 17 to 18 will suss out the competitors for the finals on April 19. Winners in the cocktail and mocktail categories stand to win a 3D2N holiday and up to $500 in cash. The winners of the other categories will win $500 in cash.

Miss Georgina Ong, last year’s cocktail challenge winner has much to look forward to in defending her title. “This year, there will be both local and international competitors,” she says. “This will make it even more challenging.”

Currently an independent bartender, her nine years’ worth of experience under the Emerald Hill Group paid off with her winning concoction –Harvest Moon. Inspired by the eponymously titled farm simulation video game on Nintendo, her gin based cocktail evokes a sense of nostalgic warmth thanks to the tropical notes gathered from the ginger and amaretto. The flavour of the cocktail is furthered with crush almonds on the rim and rosemary garnish.

Similar to Miss Ong, Mr Bryan Ho – last year’s cocktail challenge runner-up– also seems to rekindle childhood memories with his cocktail –Flying High. The bartender from Emerald Hill Group’s outlet Que Pasa mixes vodka, lemon and orange juices with vanilla syrup to create a simple and refreshing cocktail that tastes much like the locally famed lime and vanilla ice-cream of yesteryears.

“I wanted to make a cocktail that is easy to drink in Singapore’s humidity,” he says, and explained that the name derived from the lightweight Shiso leaf garnish.

Mr Zheng Pan, a bartender at Emerald Hill Group’s famed No.5 bar looks to up his position from second runner-up last year in the mocktail category. His concoction –Snowflake, is a refreshing after-dinner drink that’s ice-blended with milk and peach puree.

However, this competition (entries are already closed) is not open for just about anyone. Competitors have to come from an establishment that are in business with Australian Fruit Juice Pte Ltd (AFJ) –brand owner of RIPE fruit juices.

The wine and spirit trade show, Wine & Spirits Asia 2012, is in its 12th year and will be held at the Singapore Expo from April 17 to 19. Around 165 exhibitors from 25 countries and regions, and an estimated 25,000 visitors are expected to attend.

The event is part of Food & Hotel Asia 2012 which will also showcase Food Asia 2012, Bakery & Pastry 2012, Hotel Asia2012, Hospitality Technology 2012 and Hospitality Style Asia2012.
