Singapore Airlines is new Singapore Grand Prix title sponsor

The clues were all there: two full page ads in Today and Straits Times this morning, exclaiming “There’s a new name on the track this year.”

Is SIA doing something big for the upcoming Grand Prix in September?

The answer is yes.

Singapore Airlines has announced today that it will be taking over the reins as title sponsor of the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.

The newly named 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix will be held at the Marina Bay F1 Street Circuit from 19 to 21 September.

The deal sees SIA take over naming rights of the sport's first night race from SingTel.

The local communications giant has been the event’s title sponsor since the inaugural edition in 2008, which was won by then-Renault driver Fernando Alonso.

“We are thrilled to be taking up the title sponsorship of the one of the most exciting night races in the F1 calendar, and we are especially pleased to be doing so in the lead up to Singapore’s 50th birthday next year,” Singapore Airlines’ chief executive Goh Choon Phong said.

Formula One's head honcho Bernie Ecclestone added, “We are very happy to have SIA join the F1 family by becoming the title sponsor for the extremely popular F1 Singapore Grand Prix, which was the fist F1 night race and demonstrates Singapore’s forward thinking, an attribute Singapore Airlines has always achieved.”
