If you’ve been constantly told to stash away your toys, coil up your game controllers and hide your comic books, it’s time to hush those haters and rejoice! And where else to embrace and celebrate your inner geek than at Singapore’s annual toy, game, and comic convention?
Returning this year after a record breaking attendance of 35,000 in 2012, STGCC 2013 will be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Marina Bay Sands from 31 August to 1 September.
Kabuki Art by David Mack
Headlining the event will be Marvel Comics’ artist Adi Granov, who was chiefly responsible for designing the Iron Man suit for Hollywood screens, and for playing an instrumental role in the conceptual design of all Iron Man and The Avengers films with Marvel Studios. Granov also designed the covers of several notable Marvel franchises such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Incredible Hulk.
Joining the heroic lineup will be author/artist David Mack, who is best known as the brainchild behind the Kabuki comic book series, and also a cover artist for characters including Marvel’s Daredevil and DC Comics’ Green Arrow. Mack’s artistic style is unique for its seamless blend of Western and Eastern influences.
Of course if you take pride in being a self-proclaimed otaku (anime/manga geek) and you love everything about Japan, STGCC 2013’s got you covered as well. Character designer of the hit anime Guilty Crown, Redjuice, is scheduled to make an appearance. And if you’re crazy about the To-fu Oyako franchise, DEVILROBOTS (the design team behind this charismatic beancurd) will also be present to answer questions and take kawaii poses with.
What’s the dress code you might ask? You’re welcome to wear anything you like, though you might get bonus points and numerous nods of approval if you flashily arrive in a cosplay outfit. So don’t be shy, especially when cosplay celebrity Vampy Bit Me takes the lead with her outrageous costumes and nose-bleeding curves. Who knows what she might dress up as this year?

And with every great festival comes a great soundtrack. Expect the atmosphere to be filled with the sounds of all your favourite anime tracks, courtesy of music producer DJ kz (livetune) and violin virtuoso (who gained fame on the streets of Akihabara) TAM from Japan.
STGCC 2013 is testament to the universal fact that toys, games, and comics are not just for kids, but are part of a globally thriving industry that welcomes audiences of all ages. So come on down with your giant swords and your spiky-haired wigs; it’s playtime for everyone.
