This Month’s Pick:
Terry Fox Run
Fancy chalking up a workout and getting some good karma points thrown in? Work up a sweat and do your part to support cancer research with this fund-raising run! The world-famous Terry Fox Run is back again, with 5 or 10KM walk/run distances. For the uninitiated, Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and cancer research activist. In 1980, despite having had one leg amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. How’s that for incredible inspiration?

MR25 Progressive Series—10KM
Join the local running group, MR25 in this open event. The group organizes a “Progressive Series”, with non-competitive running events of increasing (hence progressive) distances throughout the year. The Progressive Series is a great way to aim for milestones in your running training throughout the year. If you’ve been keeping up with your running routine through the holiday season, this 10km event will be a great way to kick off 2013!
Date: Sunday 6 Jan | Time: 7am—9am | Venue: MacRitchie Reservoir | Fee: Free | Website: http://mr25.org.sg/ai1ec_event/progressive-series-10km/?instance_id=198
Fat Ass Run—January Edition
The name is a serious misnomer. For those of us who enjoy very long runs combined with some tongue-in-cheek humour, check out this event! Fat Ass is the name given to a series of low-key runs frequented by experienced runners & walkers and characterized by the tagline, "No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps". The runs are totally free to enter, and are organized by volunteers. However, note that these are casual events for passionate runners and are not professionally organized races, so don’t expect marshals’, or course markers, and you should not expect any aid either. For the adventurous runners out there, you’ll love this exercise in self-help. There will be one such ultra-run each month throughout 2013.
Date: Saturday 19 Jan | Time: 3pm | Venue: MacRitchie Reservoir | Fee: Free | Website: https://www.facebook.com/12X100kmIn12Months/info
2XU MegaTri Singapore
As the event name suggests, this is a triathlon event, and what better way to commit to a fit 2013 by getting your heart and lungs pumping swimming, cycling and running all in the same event? This is a great event for both novices and experienced, seasoned racers alike. There is the standard Olympic distance (1.5KM swim/38KM bike/10KM run), as well as a “mega” distance (3KM swim/102KM bike/27KM run) for the seasoned athlete. There are also categories for individual and relay teams, so if you’re not too keen on finishing up all three sports on your own, rope in your buddies for a go! If you’ve never done an open water swim, the race organizers are conducting two sea swim clinics on 6 and 13 January, check website for details.
Date: Sunday 20 Jan | Time: To be confirmed | Venue: Changi Beach Park | Fee: $100 to $600, depending on category

A serious endorphin addict, Jane ranks trail running high on her list of loves, and has pounded mud, sand, gravel and rocks on trails in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and her staple favourite, MacRitchie Reservoir.
