Released online last Friday 28 November, the first official teaser for the next episode in the 'Star Wars' movie franchise quickly made its way around the globe.
The Hollywood Reporter estimates that after less than 72 hours online, the 88-second video had already been viewed more than 40 million times.
The teaser for 'Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens' outperformed the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' trailer released in late July, which was viewed some 36.4 million times in its first four days on the web.
It remains to be seen whether the video from JJ Abrams' forthcoming space epic will beat the trailer for 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron', which garnered 50.6 million views in five days.
The seventh episode of 'Star Wars' is due to open in the US on 18 December 2015.
The cast includes John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill.
