Looking for a divine musical experience that transcends the radio-processed norm? Then treat yourself to A Tapestry Of Sacred Music, a showcase of enchanting aural expressions spanning the varied cultures and spiritual heritages of Asia and beyond.
This 3-day spiritual music and arts festival, to be held from April 27-29, will take place at The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, in conjunction with it’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Whether it is the haunting quality of the Gregorian chant, the sacred West African drumming of the Mandigue, or the serenity of South China’s Nanyin Ensemble of Stone Lion City, A Tapestry of Sacred Music, now in its fourth edition, provides a unique palette for the avid connoisseur.
Here are some highlights to look forward to from event:
Regarded as one of the most outstanding vocal chamber groups in the world, the Hilliard Ensemble takes center stage at the Esplanade Concert Hall (27 April)
Hilliard Ensemble – ‘Shiroi Ishi’ (Ken Ueno, 2001)
This two-part concert, which is the group’s first performance in Singapore and only stop in Asia, will feature compositions by Bach and Arvo Pärt.
Next up is the awe-inspiring “new voice of Qawwali”, Faiz Ali Faiz. He is widely regarded as the natural successor of the much-heralded Emperor of Qawwali, the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. And with his soaring voice, Faiz will mesmerize you with the mystical poetry of the Sufi, set against the musical backdrop of percussion and harmonium. Be sure to catch this larger-than-life performer at the Esplanade Theatre (28 April).
Do the crescent lunge under the stars
And as a perfect way to wind down, join the Yoga under the Stars (28-29 April) workshop as master Dev Kapil will lead participants through the different sequences of movements used in yoga for a direct connection of the mind, body and spirit.
A Tapestry of Sacred Music will also hold a series of free shows spread out throughout the Esplanade area, including at the Concourse (Stirrings) and the Outdoor Theatre (Sacred Rhythms). Everything from traditional Teochew collections to an intense Japanese sword dance will be on display. It is certainly something you would not want to miss!
A Tapestry of Sacred Music will be on from 27-29 April, at the Esplanade. For ticketing, and more information on the performances, please visit
