All you single girls (and guys), listen up.
It’s the weekend after Valentine’s Day and the celebrations are bound to spill over, but that doesn’t mean you have to put yourself through the torture of having dinner with 50 other couples in a room with ambient lighting and soft violin music playing in the background. (Find alternative things to do in our guide to 35 perfect Valentine’s Day dates.)
Here is a quick guide on dodging the pink haze of hearts while you are out to have some fun.
SALUT TO SINGLEHOOD
For an afternoon with friends, there is the month-long Rose special at quaint French bistro, O Batignolles. Choose from $8++ for a glass of Cotes-de-Provence Rose 2012($8++) or a bottle of Champagne Marguerite Guyot Rose ($120++, comes with a complimentary vegetable platter), and raise your glasses to singlehood.
HungryGoWhere has an entire guide to ‘Dining out without the shivers on Valentine’s Day’. Venture where romantics wouldn’t, to a hawker stall where you may eat voraciously without worrying about couples prodding daintily at their plates.
It is 15 February, the 30th anniversary of Singapore's Total Defence Day, and the National Museum of Singapore is housing the ‘Total Defence 30: An Experiential Showcase’. There are multilingual guided tours for groups of 15 (Mandarin: 11am, Malay: 11.30am, Tamil: 12pm). We think it is a safe bet that you’ll probably run into more families than couples.
You might meet someone fun at one of these, who knows?
If you’re looking for love, there is always the singles mixer. Valentine Vendetta 2014 is happening at New Asia Bar, where you may win up to $10,000 worth of prizes taking part in saucy games.
Over at Cafe & Bar Gavroche, there is ‘You’ve Got (fe)Male’. With the entrance fee, you’ll get a glass of house pour, as well as a ‘Love Potion’ to be given to your secret crush at the mixer. Throughout the night, you may write secret love notes to anyone you fancy. At the end of the night, one lucky couple will get a dinner date at the restaurant. More details here.
GIGS AND PARTIES
People will break your heart, but music will never leave you.
Independent label Darker Than Wax is celebrating the music of the late and great J Dilla with a tribute at Gem Bar. The Detroit native shone as a beatmaker, rapper, singer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist, and will remain an inspiration to many artistes in the world of hip hop and beyond. From 9pm, Marco Weibel, William J, Rah and Funk Bast*rd will be on hand to relive the good times.
It’s going to be more "gangster rap" than gooey love songs over at Zouk. Bulletproof Night at Zouk, featuring DJ Ghetto and rapper Shigga Shay, is going to be 100-per-cent hip hop, so no sappy tunes or lovey-dovey couples (we can’t guarantee there won’t be bumping and grinding though).
Shigga Shay is the man behind ‘Limpeh’
If you don't have a date, you are already saving lots of (hard-earned) money by not having to buy a gift or splash out on a dinner. Treat yourself instead.
Go for that long overdue manicure or hair roots colour touch-up (we recommend Urban Hair by Ginrich who helped give one of our users a STYL+ makeover). Or you may book yourself a spa appointment for a truly pampering experience. Check out the list of 'Best Spas in Singapore'.
After that, in anticipation of the Oscars in Hollywood in less than two weeks, round up some friends and catch up on Academy Award-nominated films this weekend: '12 Years A Slave', 'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Philomena' are showing in cinemas. Check out inSing at the 2014 Oscars, your guide to the 86th Academy Awards, featuring the nominees, winners, photos and our take on all the movies.
Enjoy your time with friends and have a fabulous weekend.
