TGIF!: Your weekend guide (12-14 Sep 2014)

Music & nightlife

There’s only one week left to go till F1 and its packed schedule of entertainment highlights, but there’s already something to look forward to this week.

DJ EZ will helm the Mixmag Asia Launch Series tonight over at Canvas. From pirate radio to decks all over the world, the man responsible for the rise of UK Garage is in Singapore for one night only.

Meanwhile, the star-studded YG Family will be having a mega concert over Saturday and Sunday (13 and 14 September).  It’s not everyday you get the likes of Big Bang, 2NE1 and Psy all playing the same stage, so don’t miss this one.  There are still tickets available for the YG Family Galaxy Tour.

On Sunday, 14 September, catch Montreal’s Blue Hawaii live in Singapore for the first time over at Life is Beautiful. It’ll be a night of chilled out, meandering tunes with the electronic duo.

While you’re out and about this weekend, hitch a ride home in style with Johnnie Walker’s #ImNOTdriving campaign that runs from 10 to 21 September. Up to $3,000 of Uber credit will be given away to those who pledged not to drink and drive. New Uber sign-ups who use the promo code IMNOTDRIVINGSG will also receive $20 off their first ride.

All of you have to do is snap a picture of you and your friends on a night out with Johnnie Walker and post it onto Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #ImNOTdriving. The fans who post the best pledges will win Uber credit and stand a chance to spend an afternoon with McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen.

Also happening this weekend (12 to 14 September) are the Noise Singapore 2014 Music Mentorship Concerts. It’s your chance to catch a glimpse of the future of Singapore’s music scene, with 18 young bands and musicians playing at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.

The gigs also spill over into the following week, with Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro playing in Singapore for the first time in their 20 year career, on Monday, 15 September at The Coliseum at Hard Rock Hotel. They even promised an “extra long set” to make up for not coming here sooner.

Arts & culture

Spoken word poetry fans should head to Canvas on 13 September from 4 to 7pm for SPEAK. Featuring Sekaliwags. Organised by a poetry collective, SPEAK is a platform for both seasoned and upcoming poets, and encourages free speech and sharing. Not to mention, Happy Hour starts extra early at 3pm and last till 9pm.

Dance aficionados will be gathering at the Singapore Latin Extravaganza all this weekend at *Scape, for workshops, shows and dance parties. Salsa lovers should note that some of the world’s top instructors will be conducting classes too. Who knows? You might be able to pick up some slick new moves.
