TGIF!: Your weekend guide (17-20 Jan 2013)

It’s the weekend and if you are wondering what you can possibly do this weekend, then you have come to the right place.

pechakucha
Pecha Kucha Singapore

We have trawled through our events superhighway to highlight the very best happenings around the island. So read on, and by the way, there is no need to thank us.

It is in our opinion that it is never too late to celebrate the New Year, therefore why don’t you come down to the Home Club for this year’s Pecha Kucha. This is an event where speakers from diverse backgrounds like design, photography and even motivational speaking will give a talk following Pecha Kucha’s unique 20x20 format. For those unfamiliar, this means speakers use only 20 images and have only 20 manic seconds per image.

Check out local art at the Sew-Out Show this weekend. Held at The Connoisseur Concerto at Boat Quay, the event features digital artworks by Cain Lim of Affiniti design collective. Furthermore, you can even create your own art by picking out a section of an artwork which will then be hand-crafted by Xiehui Stone of Stone For Gold to create your very own unique piece of art.

Highlights from Jay Park’s New Breed concert and press conference in 2012

Returning to Singapore for another concert, Jay Park will be wowing his fans at the Star Performing Arts Centre with material from his multi-platinum album ‘Newbreed’. The former leader of K-Pop boyband 2pm has been making waves in the K-Pop scene with his blend of urban-infused hip hop and pop. Bring earplugs, because we have a feeling the screaming girls will be out in full force.

Watch the dancers from Frontier Danceland’s PULSE Programme as they perform their final performance. The programme is designed to help promising young dancers hone their craft in contemporary dance through an intensive programme which teaches them the basics and more. Taught by Frontier’s resident dancers, the show represents not only an entertaining night of contemporary dance but also a peek into Singapore’s future dance prospects.

The Arts House will have a unique and interesting concert this Saturday.  Performing songs from kindergarden, a quintet of singers and musicians (Joanna Paul, Anna Koor, Adrian Poon, William Lim and Shane Thio) will be recalling their childhood years for this gig. Armed with a repertoire of songs from our childhood, they will be tapping on not only their nostalgia but also your rose-tinted memories of days gone by.

cycling routes
Pedal through Singapore this weekend

If one of your fitness resolutions this year is to keep fit, we have a couple of ideas on how you can stick to it. Why not get your workout buddies or the kids to go on a run at these spots this weekend. If you're more comfortable on two wheels (and the wind in your face), then these 'secret' cycling routes might just get the job done.

For those of your who thread on the hipster side of life, there will be a workshop catering especially for you! The La Sardina workshop at the Lomography Gallery Store will allow you to discover what you can truly do with your La Sardina camera. Its 22mm wide angle plastic lens can truly take some magical pictures and this workshop will teach you how to do just that.

For more ideas on more things to do this weekend, don’t forget to check out our comprehensive events calendar. Have a great weekend everyone and see you back here next week.
