'The Assassin' cleans up at Golden Horse awards

Taiwanese produced 'The Assassin' came out on top at the Golden Horse Awards, scooping five gongs at the ceremony which recognises Chinese language films.

The movie, which is set in the Tang Dynasty, took home prizes for best direction, cinematography, sound effects, make-up and costume design.

The martial arts film takes place in 9th century China and is centred around a female killer who is appointed to slay corrupt government officials, but takes a twist when she is sent to kill her cousin who she was once betrothed to.

The awards are regarded as the Chinese equivalent to the U.S. Academy Awards and have been held every year since 1962.

Some 427 films were entered into 52nd edition of The Golden Horse Awards this year- including 153 feature films, four animated features, 200 short films and 70 documentaries.
