If there’s one musical you have to catch, it’s got to be this one. Easily the most successful and longest running Broadway show, The Phantom of the Operawill be returning to our shores for a strictly limited season this year from 16 July at The MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands.
Even if you haven’t caught the musical or the film, you’re probably familiar with its classic main theme song. Instead of cringing when you hear your overly-dramatic friend shriek the chorus over dinner, we think you’re better off getting tickets to the show. Here are a few reasons why:
1) It is estimated that The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by more than 130 million people all over the world. That’s more people than if you gathered the combined population of Singapore, Germany and Argentina together to watch the musical – it’s high time you joined the club too.
2) The cast album has gone six times platinum in the US, nine times platinum in Germany, 11 times platinum in Korea and 31 times platinum in Taiwan. We expect nothing short of chills when the music is performed live this July.
3) The Broadway production celebrated its 10,000th performance on 11 February 2012. A musical that has enjoyed longevity like theirs clearly equates to ‘die die must watch’ in our minds.
Mr. George Tanasijevich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marina Bay Sands said, “The Phantom of the Opera is a timeless Broadway classic. We are proud that one of the most respected musicals of all time joins the league of the other successful Broadway style shows we have brought to Singapore.”
When it was first brought to Singapore in 2007, the musical was completely sold out. Now, who says Singaporeans are an uncouth bunch and can’t appreciate the arts?
Quoted as “God’s gift to musical theatre” by UK's The Times, Singapore is definitely ready for a third run of the Phantom. [AMENDED]
