If you were a ’90s kid, you’d remember watching a cartoon series about a creepy family with a disembodied hand for a pet – or if you’re older, a ’60s black and white TV show with iconic snaps in their theme song. The legacy of The Addams Family is given a fresh coat of black paint with Broadway’s smash hit musical comedy debuting in Singapore this 9 to 28 July at Resorts World Sentosa’s Festive Grand Theatre.

Among the talented cast is seasoned actor Jesse Sharp, who will be playing Gomez Addams, the patriach of the Addams family. inSing managed to squeeze in a few questions via email with Sharp, who was pretty stoked to be coming to town this July to present his newest role yet.

“I absolutely loved Singapore the last time I performed there and I'm so happy to return. I'm excited to visit the Raffles Hotel again and experience the amazing food!” Sharp raved.

Sharp has an immaculate acting resume that includes two Heineken advertisements, a role in ‘Law & Order’, and playing Macbeth at the Utah Shakespeare Festival amongst many others. We asked the versatile actor if his heart lay in theatre or film.

“That’s a tough one. I really love doing both. I am probably a theatre actor first and foremost though, and I love to return to the theatre if I've been working on a film project for a while.”

In the two and a half hour musical, Gomez Addams (played by Sharp) will find out that his sweet daughter, Wednesday Addams, has fallen in love with a young man from a respectable family. After some begging from Wednesday, he will struggle to keep this a secret from his adored wife, Morticia.

“Gomez is a funny, over-the-top and zany guy. He is also an eternal optimist and loves his family more than anything so it was very easy to tap into that love that he has for his daughter,” Sharp describes his character.

So how does Sharp get into the head of the smooth, suave patriarch of the family?

“It takes about 30 minutes for the makeup and wardrobe and about another 30 minutes to vocalise and mentally prepare. I like to leave the world behind completely and fully focus on the zany world of the Addams family before we start.”

Come this July, you will see characters from the kooky family finally come to life on stage at the Festive Grand. Sharp predicts it will be a ‘light-hearted good time with lots of funny moments and a touching family story’.

His favourite line from the musical?

"Mi amor, creature of constant surprises – YOU HAVE LEGS!"
