Movie director Rian Johnson has come up with a novel way for you to “loop” your movie experience with his latest effort ‘Looper’.
The writer and director has released a downloadable commentary track, offering insights into filming, writing and creative processes, for you to listen to as you watch the movie in the cinema.
“I recorded a commentary track to be downloaded, put on an ipod and listened to in the theatre as you’re watching ‘Looper’,” wrote the director on the ‘Looper’ tumblr page, “It is totally different from the commentary track that will be on the Blu/DVD, a bit more technical and detailed.”
‘Looper’ is a science-fiction thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis as futuristic hitmen. The movie takes place in a world where time travel exists, but is only used on the black market. When the mob wants to kill someone, they send the target 30 years into the past where a contract killer does the dirty work. Read our review of ‘Looper’ here.
This is not the first time that Johnson tried to engage fans with a novel idea; in 2008, he released a commentary for ‘The Brothers Bloom’.
Johnson has also pointed out that the commentary track is not targeted at first-time viewers, therefore encouraging fans to see the film more than once.
"Needless to say, this is not to be listened to on a first viewing, or before you've seen the film," wrote Johnson.
Instructions on how to synchronise the MP3 to the film are in the introduction of the track which you can download at this link.
