To borrow a quote from Heidi Klum: “As you know in fashion, one day you're in. And the next day, you're out.” This also rings true in the nightlife business, when clubs are subjected to the aural whims and fancies of punters. So to last two decades is no easy feat for any club, not to mention picking up a string of accolades while they’re at it. And Zouk has done it all.
Most recently, the club was voted No. 9 on DJ Mag’s annual Top 100 Clubs list. Not bad for a club from Singapore. From hosting top notch guest DJs and conjuring up mad cap theme parties to throwing its annual beach day out ZoukOut, the club has moved beyond the cool club tag and is now one of the most recognisable clubbing brands ever.
Come April, this leading light of Singapore nightlife, celebrates 20 years of good times. And to celebrate this milestone, the club is giving itself a deserved pat on the back, and throwing four consecutive nights of dancing, prancing (Apr 13-16), and providing some essential earwax to all you party animals. Get those dancing shoes ready.
Day 1- Mambo Jambo (Apr 13)
You’re not a clubber if you haven’t paid a visit to Zouk on a Wednesday when it hosts its infamous Mambo Jambo nights. As old as the club itself, this theme party is for those who can’t get enough of the 80s (think Belinda Carlisle and Spandau Ballet) and those of you that just want a quick perk-me-up from work. Of course, it’s apt that the anniversary proceedings begin with this hilarious party which is surprisingly one of those that has defined the club.
The glo-sticks come out on the second night of the anniversary toss-up with DJ Mag’s No. 1 DJ of 2010, Armin van Buuren. Known for throwing trance with a dash of house into a blender to produce some delectable and melodic acid-tinged tunes, the club is set to be in a state of trance once this newly minted superstar DJ steps into the DJ booth.
It’s D-Day and the party’s just getting started. If you’ve ever been to one of Zouk’s birthday shindigs, you’ll know that surprises are always in store. On this night, the club celebrates 20 years of its rich clubbing heritage as well as gives us a peek into its future.
Any clubber worth his weight in vinyl records should know this clubbing luminary, who has built a career in New York, Miami and Ibizan clubs. Although the DJ scene has its fair share of superstars, none can surpass the talents of Danny Tenaglia who also happens to turn 50 just last month. Known for his marathon sets that can last as long as 12 hours, Tenaglia’s brand of music that spans the dance music gamut of house, disco, minimal tech and progressive tunes. He’s back to regale us on the ones-and-twos, and shows us why he’s hailed as the "DJ's DJ”.
Zouk 20th Anniversary Week happens from Apr 13-16 at Zouk. Tickets $23-35 at the door.
