Franchise – it's the magic word Hollywood is fixated on. A string of bottom-line guaranteed sequels, along with potential diversification in the form of video games or television shows? Sounds like an executive's dream. However, the real world doesn't always work according to the machinations of executives and suits.
In a world where everyone's hoping to create the next money printing Harry Potter or Marvel universe, there've been plenty of promising flash in the pans that have fallen by the wayside along the way.
Couple that with a lack of originality and the general audience's tendencies to not reward studios taking risks with new ideas, it's not hard to see exactly why ‘Ghostbusters’ and 'Independence Day', two franchises that have beloved original movies, are brought back.
