2012 summer movie preview: The (not really but almost) sequels/prequels

This is the category where movies carefully tip-toe the line between being an awesome sequel to a well-loved series/ obvious cash grab.

Let's study the circumstances which led to the first film in this category; ‘The Bourne Legacy.

First off, there’s no Matt Damon. Secondly, there’s no Paul Greengrass, the director who helmed the gripping trilogy. Thirdly, “The Bourne Legacy” is the name of a book, but the movie isn't based on the book. Cue the confused faces.

What saves it is an awesome cast; Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachael Weisz and Joan Allen who reprises her role as the deputy director.

As proven by his star turn in ‘The Hurt Locker’ and recent screen outings in ‘The Town’ and ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’, Renner is clearly made for action movies, so long as the story can tie in with the first three, this could be a winner.

Meanwhile, Ridley Scott makes his long awaited return to the world of science fiction. Though originally conceived as a prequel to his 1979 masterpiece ‘Alien’, both him and writer Damon Lindelof have clarified that ‘Prometheus’ is only indirectly connected to ‘Alien’.

So, if it isn't about the origin of the Alien, what the hell is it about then?

The truth is, we don't know either. We know from the trailers that a star map is discovered from imagery of many cultures like the Aztec. The crew is then sent out on an expedition, on a ship presumably named ‘Prometheus’. While there, they face – big surprise, not! –  a threat to humanity's existence.

Yeah, that's about it.
