5 movies to watch this week (18 Jun 2015)

For fans of: ‘Despicable Me’ movies

In this prequel movie of sorts, we follow our favourite despicable henchmen, the Minions, before they meet Gru: first as single-celled yellow organisms to being sidekicks of evil masters.

After the demise of their various masters – from T-Rex to Napoleon – the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

Then they cross paths with the world’s first female supervillain, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), who has her eye on Britain's crown jewels.

‘Barely Lethal’

For fans of: ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ (2015) and ‘Spy Kids’ (2001)

An action-comedy starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba, Sophie Turner and Samuel L. Jackson.

A teenage special ops agent (Steinfeld) yearning for a "normal" life fakes her own death and enrols as an exchange student in a typical American high school.

She quickly learns that surviving the treacherous waters of being a teenager can be more difficult than international espionage.

For fans of: The original ‘Poltergeist’ (1982)

‘Evil Dead’ director Sam Raimi presents a modern take on the 1982 suburban frightfest ‘Poltergeist’, with Gil Kenan (‘Monster House’) directing.

Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt star as the Bowens, a couple whose youngest daughter is abducted by terrifying apparitions.

‘Careful What You Wish For’

For fans of: The Jonas Brothers

In his first serious (and most grown-up) role, Jonas plays Doug, a handsome self-conscious student who gets more than what he bargained for when he starts an affair with Lena (Isabel Lucas), the wife of an investment banker Elliot Harper (Dermot Mulroney).

‘Wonder Mama’

For fans of: ‘We Are Family’ (2006)

After a successful screening at this year’s Singapore Chinese Film Festival, Hong Kong filmmaker Clifton Ko’s bittersweet drama – on how a middle-aged woman’s life is turned upside down when her estranged husband returns after being away for 10 years – gets a limited run at Filmgarde cinemas in Singapore. The movis stars Petrina Fung, Kenneth Tsang, Susan Yiu Yam-Yam.
