5 movies to watch this week (30 Apr 2015)

For fans of: ‘Sex is Zero’ (2002) and ‘Vulgaria’ (2012)

Award-winning actress Yeo Yann Yann plays a sex-starved condom critic in Han Yew Kwang’s gross-out sex comedy about love, sex (or lack there of) and prophylactics.

The movie comprises three interwoven but unconnected stories: the first is Yeo’s Baoling who is pressured by an imaginary human-sized durian condom to use it before it expires. She calls a plumber (Julian Hee) and that leads to hilarious results.

Another features a libidinous casanova (played by Alaric Tay) who experiences a surreal larger-than-life dream that includes a porn actress (Oon Shu Ann). The third story centres on an elderly couple (played by Marcus Chin and Catherine Sng) whose marriage is saved by condoms.

‘Age of Adaline’

For fans of: ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ (2008) and ‘Tuck Everlasting’ (2002)

Blake Lively stars in this romantic fantasy, telling the tale of Adaline Bowman, possessor of eternal youth, remaining 29 years old over the course of the 20th century.

She leads a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn also star.

For fans of: ‘Romeo + Juliet’ (1996) and ‘Hamlet’ (2000)

Writer-director Michael Almereyda takes on Shakespeare's work again after 2000's 'Hamlet', this time modernising one of the Bard's lesser-regarded works, the tragicomedy ‘Cymbeline’.

Taking cues from US TV series ‘Sons of Anarchy’, Ed Harris plays Cymbeline, the leader of the Briton Motorcycle Club, who is angry with his daughter Imogen (Dakota Johnson) when she falls for Posthumous (Penn Badgley), a skateboarder. He is also at war with the local police force, led by Caius Lucius (Vondie Curtis-Hall). Milla Jovovich plays the evil Queen. Ethan Hawke, Anton Yelchin and John Leguizamo are also part of the cast.

For fans of: ‘V/H/S’ (2012) and ‘Apollo 18' (2011)

Found-footage horror takes an evolutionary leap into the social media world.

‘Unfriended’ is a chilling horror tale that plays out through computer monitors, following a group of teenage pals in a chat-room session as they are intercepted by an elusive person using their dead friend’s account.

‘The Cobbler’

For fans of: ‘Click’ (2006) and ‘The Wedding Singer’ (1998)

Adam Sandler leads this fantastical drama from filmmaker Thomas McCarthy (‘The Station Agent’) playing a New York shoe repairman who has lost his passion for his job. Then he finds a magical stitching machine that lets him transform into anyone whose shoes it repairs. Dustin Hoffman co-stars.
