M. Night Shyamalan couldn’t have picked a better time to debut the first trailer for his upcoming sci-fi feature ‘After Earth’.

With 21 December 2012 fast approaching and the Mayan calendar predicting the apocalypse (despite scientific studies that say otherwise), this trailer somewhat provides a peek into what our planet will possibly look like if a massive calamity DOES happen.

The plot for ‘After Earth’ is fairly straightforward. Teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher (Will Smith) crash land on Earth. This is not the Earth that we’re familiar with, but one that has been abandoned by humans for almost a millennia. The planet has somewhat "de-evolved" into a wild prehistoric state and is quarantined. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must undertake a perilous journey to look for help. Along the way, he faces many dangers, including the terrain and animal species that have evolved to kill humans.

The trailer provides the set-up for the film with a voiceover by Cypher, and directed to Kitai. It provides an insight into Shyamalan’s visions of a post-apocalyptic Earth that is vast, wildly beautiful and dangerous. There’s a lot to take in visually, which is one of the director’s strengths.

‘After Earth’ opens in theatres here June 2013
