Air NZ gets on ‘The Hobbit’ bandwagon with new safety video

Expect a flight of fantasy the next time you board an Air New Zealand flight.

Director Sir Peter Jackson stars in the latest inflight safety video of the airline – ‘An Unexpected Briefing”.

The video pays tribute to the upcoming ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, features hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards as well as other characters from the ‘Lord of The Rings’ universe.

Jackson also makes an appearance, finding the “one ring” under his seat. Like Gollum in the movie, he says the already famous line –“my precious”—before putting the ring on and disappearing into thin air.

The clip also features New Zealander Dean O'Gorman, who plays the Dwarf Fili in the movie, and Mike and Royd Tolkien, great-grandsons of the book's author, JRR Tolkien.

Even Gollum has managed to get past customs to sneak onto the plane.

The video was created in conjunction with the Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop, which have worked on both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films.

The carrier is known for its innovative and interesting in-flight safety videos. For the previous Rugby World Cup, The All-Blacks, the country’s national team starred in one. Even fitness guru Richard Simmons starred in his very own disco themed video.

Perhaps the craziest video will be the one with the crew wearing nothing but body paint.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ opens in theatres 13 December 2012
